Personal Picks: Dubai Heritage Village, Dubai Polo Club, Dhow Cruise on the Dubai Creek
We first fell in love with Dubai in 2000 during a stopover after a session we offered in Mumbai. Due to our knowledge of this destination, Anne Thornley-Brown, our founder and President, was selected by the Dubai Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM). for the Toronto leg of its cross-Canada Roadshow at the prestigious Royal York Hotel in November, 2007.
Dubai has changed dramatically during the last 7 years but our love affiar with this destination has blossomed. As a result of these changes, we think of Dubai as not one but 3 dramatically different incentive travel destinations.
The best way to see the Dubai of the past, present and future is from the Al Dawaar Revolving Restaurant, located on the 25th floor of Hyatt Regency Dubai, one of our favourites. The view of the Arabian Gulf, the Dubai Creek the Palm Diera, and the city is spectacular from that location. If you have the budget for it, a helicopter tour of Dubai will give your team a panoramic view of the city.
|
|
| |
|
|

- Dubai of the Past:
In Diera, the area surrounding the Dubai Creek, you get a glimpse of Dubai's maritime and pearl diving traditions. Then, hop into an Abra, cross the Dubai Creek and you'll be able to view incredible architecture, the Dubai museum and traditional mosques.
If you can visit the Dubai Heritage Village at night, you'll find yourself strolling through a fairy tale environment, an Arabian Nights fantasy that includes a traditional tented Bedouin village, wooden chests, cooking utensils, and ancient armoury. You'll have an opportunity to explore the Sheikh Saeed Al Maktoum House next door. Built in 1896, it was the residence of the former ruler Sheikh Saeed Al Maktoum, who lived there until his death in 1958. Suspended in time, it will give you a sense of the explosive growth and development that has become synonymous with Dubai.
We highly recommend a Dhow dinner cruise on the Dubai Creek for an absolutely mesmerizing view of this area. You'll be able to see Dubai of the present as a backdrop to this part of the city and have a context in which to place the current development.

- Dubai of the Present:
They say that the Dubai skyline changes every 6 months. Recently, in the area near the Burj Al Arab, we counted over 100 mega high rise buildings under construction....and then we stopped counting. The world has come to Dubai and no one knows when the growth will end. We recommend a stay of at least 2 nights at one of the beach hotels where you'll be able to see some of the landmarks for which Dubai has become famous.
You'll pass the familiar Burj Al Arab and Jumeirah Beach Hotel as well as the Burj Dubai, the tallest structure in the world which is still under construction. You'll also be able to
shop for designer fashions at Mall of the Emirates or Ibn Batuta Mall, a mall with international theming. When you are at Mall of the Emirates, you can also go skiing. Yes skiing on snow in what was up until recently the heart of the desert.

- Dubai of the Future:
Venture out into the desert and you will see the Arabian Ranches that Emaar Properties is developing. Here you'll find the Dubai Polo Club and Riding Club. Venture further out into the desert and you'll pass the area in which 36 upscale resorts with world destinations themes is slated for development.
Dubai is re-inventing itself on land and at sea. Transforming the coastline is the largest collection of man made islands in the world. You'll find the Map (of the World) and the Palm Island Trilogy consisting of Palm Jumeirah,
Palm Jebel Ali and the Palm Deira. If you stay in a seaview room at the Oasis Beach Hotel, you can stand on your balcony and watch the Palm Jumeirah take shape.

|
| |
|
|
While you are in Dubai, a day trip to Al Ain, an incredible oasis city that has welcomed travellers from time immemorial, is an absolute must. Al Ain is the oldest and most original settlement of the United Arab Emirates. You'll be able to witness the transformation of Al Ain from desert and rocky mountain to thriving metropolis.
Attractions include:
- the Al Ain Museum with findings from 2000 year old archealogical digs
- Sheik Sayed House
- the Al Ain Souk
- the largest Camel Market in the UAE

A variety of experiences, ranging from desert to mountain, will give you an opportunity to explore Oman's rich cultural heritage. Camp out in the desert, go rock climbing in the mountains, explore historic forts, shop at traditional silver and spice souks, and stroll through ancient villages.
One thing is certain. You will fall in love with Oman. You won't be able to help yourself. We did. Landing in Muscat in October 2007, we weren't sure what to expect. We discovered a truly unique destination with endless possibilities for incentive travel. From the sweeping panoramic views from mountain vistas to the secluded beach hideaways and those adorbable roundabouts in Muscat and Nizwa, Oman will enchant you.
In contrast to the runaway development in parts of Dubai, His Majesty, Sultan Qaboos bin Said has decreed that no commercial building can be higher than 6 stories and no residence highter than 3. All new buildings must conform to traditional Arab architectural design with flat roofs and light white or creme colours.
You'll have a range of properties from which to chose. From The Chedi with it's soothing ambiance to the Shangri-La's enchanting Barr Al Jissah Resort and Spa that looks like it was created from frames of the movie Lost Horizon, there is something for everyone.
Frozen in time. Now you can explore the home of Sinbad the Sailor, Frankincense and Myrrh. The perfect Arabian Night's fantasy awaits you and your team in Oman.
